Chihuahua

The world's smallest dog with the biggest attitude.

The Chihuahua is the smallest recognised dog breed, named after the Mexican state where it was rediscovered. Bold, alert and fiercely devoted to its person, it packs a huge personality and a surprisingly long lifespan into a tiny, portable frame.

Temperament & persoonlijkheid

  • Bold
  • Alert
  • Devoted
  • Spirited

Chihuahuas are confident, sometimes feisty little dogs that bond intensely with one person and can be wary or snappy with strangers if not socialised. They are alert watchdogs that bark readily, and they dislike cold. With early socialisation and consistent boundaries they are affectionate, clever and highly portable companions.

Vachtverzorging & verzorging

Grooming is minimal — smooth coats need occasional brushing, long coats a few times a week. Their small size means they chill easily (a sweater helps), are fragile around rough play, and are prone to dental crowding, so daily tooth care and a good diet matter. Guard against "small dog syndrome" with proper training.

Veelgestelde vragen

Are Chihuahuas good with children?

They are best with gentle, older children. Their fragile size and bold temperament make rough handling risky for both dog and child.

Why do Chihuahuas shake?

They often tremble from cold, excitement or stress due to their small size and high metabolism; persistent shaking warrants a vet check.
