The Beagle is a small-to-medium scent hound bred to hunt rabbits and hares in packs. Merry, curious and led by an extraordinary nose, it is friendly with people and dogs alike, but its powerful tracking instinct and famous bay make training a rewarding challenge.
Beagles are cheerful, sociable pack dogs that adore company and rarely do well left alone. Their nose rules their brain — once on a scent they can become single-minded and "deaf" to recall, so secure areas and patient, food-motivated training are essential. They are vocal, using a distinctive baying howl.
