A hardy Nordic climber built for the cold.
The Norwegian Forest Cat ("Wegie") is a large, sturdy breed with a thick, water-shedding double coat that evolved to survive harsh Scandinavian winters. Featured in Norse mythology, it is a strong climber with a friendly, even-tempered nature.
Wegies are calm, confident cats that enjoy climbing and observing from a height but are not needy. They are affectionate with family, tolerant of children and other pets, and adaptable, combining an independent streak with genuine sociability on their own terms.
Schaal: laag tot hoog (1–3)
The double coat is surprisingly self-maintaining for most of the year, needing a weekly comb — but during the spring moult it sheds dramatically and requires daily grooming to remove the shedding undercoat. Provide tall, sturdy climbing furniture to satisfy their love of heights.

They appear in Norse legends as the cats that pulled the goddess Freya's chariot
Their "climbing claws" let them descend trees head-first
They can take up to five years to reach full size
Both are large, longhaired and cold-adapted, but the Wegie has a triangular face and straighter profile, while the Maine Coon is typically larger with a more rectangular body and squarer muzzle.
They shed moderately most of the year but heavily during the spring moult, when daily grooming helps manage the loose undercoat.
Only the varieties FIFe actually recognises for each breed.
