The Pomeranian is a tiny spitz-type dog with a fox-like face and a profuse double coat, descended from larger sled dogs of the Arctic. Lively, bold and endlessly curious, it is a compact companion that thinks it is far bigger than it is.

Pomeranians are confident extroverts — playful, inquisitive and quick to bark at anything new, which makes them good little watchdogs. They are affectionate and trainable but can be feisty and bossy, so early socialisation and gentle consistency help. Their small size makes them ill-suited to rough play.

The double coat needs brushing two or three times a week to prevent matting, with heavier shedding during seasonal "blows". Never shave a Pom, as the coat may not regrow properly (post-clipping alopecia). Dental care is crucial given their tiny mouths, and they can overheat, so avoid heat extremes.

No. Shaving can trigger post-clipping alopecia where the coat regrows patchily or not at all, and it removes the coat's natural insulation.
