Ragdoll

The cat that goes limp in your arms.

The Ragdoll is a large, semi-longhaired breed with striking blue eyes and colourpoint markings, named for its tendency to relax completely when picked up. Developed in 1960s California, it is one of the most docile and affectionate cats.

CoatSemi-long, silky, low-undercoat

Temperament & personality

  • Docile
  • Affectionate
  • Placid
  • People-oriented

Ragdolls are famously mellow, floppy and trusting β€” they tend to follow their people, greet them at the door and go boneless when held. Their gentle, quiet demeanour makes them poorly suited to outdoor life, as they lack the wariness of street-savvy cats and are best kept indoors.

Grooming & care

The silky coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than it looks β€” but a twice-weekly comb keeps the ruff and hindquarters tangle-free, more often in shedding season. They are slow to mature (up to four years) and can grow very large, so provide big, sturdy furniture.

Health tendencies to watch

Every breed has predispositions. These are things worth discussing with your vet β€” not diagnoses.

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) β€” a Ragdoll-specific gene test exists
  • Bladder stones and urinary issues can occur
  • Prone to obesity given their laid-back nature
  • Large size warrants joint monitoring in older cats

Frequently asked questions

Why do Ragdoll cats go limp?

It is a signature breed trait β€” many Ragdolls relax their muscles completely and flop when held, which is how they got their name.

Should Ragdolls be kept indoors?

Yes. Their trusting, docile nature leaves them vulnerable outdoors, so they are safest as indoor cats with enrichment.
