The Pomeranian is a tiny spitz-type dog with a fox-like face and a profuse double coat, descended from larger sled dogs of the Arctic. Lively, bold and endlessly curious, it is a compact companion that thinks it is far bigger than it is.

Pomeranians are confident extroverts — playful, inquisitive and quick to bark at anything new, which makes them good little watchdogs. The double coat needs brushing two or three times a week to prevent matting, with heavier shedding during seasonal "blows". Never shave a Pom, as the coat may not regrow properly (post-clipping alopecia). Dental care is crucial given their tiny mouths, and they can overheat, so avoid heat extremes.
