The Border Collie is widely regarded as the most intelligent dog breed, developed on the Anglo-Scottish border to herd sheep with an intense "eye" and tireless drive. Athletic, sensitive and endlessly eager to work, it excels at herding, agility and obedience — and needs a job to be happy.

Border Collies are brilliant, driven and hypersensitive to their handler, learning commands astonishingly fast. That same intensity means they need constant physical and mental work; under-stimulated Collies develop obsessive behaviours, herd children or pets, and become anxious. They are best for active owners who can provide training, sport or real work.

The double coat needs brushing a couple of times a week (daily during moults) and sheds moderately to heavily. Grooming, though, is the easy part — the real commitment is exercise and enrichment: hours of daily activity, training games and problem-solving to satisfy this working mind.
